A Necessary Adjunct
June 10th - August 8th, 2014
The Center for Ongoing Research & Projects is pleased to present A Necessary Adjunct. In an ongoing collaboration with the Fine Arts Library of The Ohio State University, COR&P will curate and co-host a working exhibition of exhibition catalogues from library holdings and private collections along with illuminating material from contemporaneous periodicals and publications. This exhibition focuses on catalogues that do not play a subordinate role as supplementary documentation or didactic contextualization, but rather are exhibition replacements, complements, or parallel works. From Seth Siegelaub’s Xerox Book and the Art By Telephone record-as-catalogue to the more recent recursive publications as works (and works as publications) of Dexter Sinister, this exhibition traverses a history which complicate and challenge the traditional systematic ordering of the an exhibition checklist.
This is a “working exhibition” in the sense that it is an ongoing research project performed in public, with the aim to expand COR&P’s own publishing agenda. As such, the contents of the exhibition will fluctuate over the course of the summer months. The COR&P staff will produce a set of annotated index cards examining and recoding how catalogues function as “necessary adjuncts” to exhibitions. The annotated cards will be displayed alongside the books. The exhibition catalogue for A Necessary Adjunct will be produced over the course of the exhibition during gallery hours.
The research log for A Necessary Adjunct is being updated over the course of the exhibition.
